OUR AGENCY'S HISTORY

Founded by Wakefield Town Clerk Charles F. Hartshorne in 1870, the Chas. F. Hartshorne & Son, Inc. Insurance Agency was the first insurance agency to operate in Wakefield. In its infancy, the agency worked with two insurance companies (including the Franklin Fire Insurance Company founded by Benjamin Franklin), specializing only in fire insurance. Early records also indicate that there was an earthquake coverage policy taken out by the Wakefield Trust Company, the first such policy written in New England.
The types of coverage increased when Charles' son, Frederic S. Hartshorne, joined the business in 1892. So did the number of policyholders, as did the states in which the agency did business.

Chas. F. Hartshorne & Son, Inc. moved from its former location in the Town Clerk's office to 3 Chestnut Street, Wakefield, in 1939 shortly after the death of its founder. Frederic's grandson, Joseph, having been associated with the family business for several years, became president in 1952. Three years later, his brother Jean, following his return from the Korean War, also joined the business, becoming president after Joseph's untimely death in 1958.
